Wall and floor tiles to make a room look bigger
When space is limited – whether that’s in a bathroom, kitchen or living room – the right choice of wall and floor tiles can make all the difference.
Here are 6 easy-to-follow tips to give the illusion of more space with wall and floor tiles:
1. Opt for large format floor tiles
Larger tiles will trick the eye and make a room look bigger, rather than smaller. The main reason for this is that larger tiles reduce the ‘busy’ factor, whereas smaller tiles, such as mosaics (with comparatively more grout lines), will increase how busy the design looks.
2. Choose light coloured tiles
Paler shades of wall and floor tiles reflect light which will visually open up a space, whereas darker tones absorb light which will make the room feel smaller.
3. Favour glossy wall or floor tiles
Glazed tiles will also bounce light back, making the room feel larger, whilst entirely matt tiles absorb light.
4. Choose plain tiles
Highly patterned tiles will dominate and visually ramp up how busy the room is, so opting for plainer or subtly patterned tiles is advisable if you want to avoid making a space feel cramped.
5. Go for matching wall and floor tiles for a harmonious look
Tiles which match, or are similarly toned, will make a room appear larger. Conversely, two extreme and contrasting shades will visually ‘cut up’ the space.
6. Consider the configuration of your floor tiles
When you lay your floor tiles the best pattern for adding space is a standard grid or elongating diamond layout. Following the principal of avoiding busy-ness, brickbond or staggered patterns will look busier and therefore make the room appear more limited.
Other tips for making a room appear more spacious with wall and tiles
Using rectified floor tiles will allow you to minimise the width of your grout joints, another great way to make a room look more spacious. Furthermore, choosing a complementary or matching coloured grout, rather than a contrasting one, will help grout lines blend and look seamless.
Ceramic and porcelain floor tiles offer so many benefits – they are the perfect companion to an underfloor heating system which means that walls can be freed up from traditional wall-mounted radiators which will further add to the perception of space.
