Tilemates Brighton celebrates Original Style’s extensive Victorian tile range
Striking patterned floor and wall tiles are quintessentially British; having first emerged in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, they have remained popular for domestic and commercial use ever since.
In this article Wendy, a member of our Brighton tile showroom team, gives us the lowdown on our popular Original Style Victorian-style floor and wall tile ranges and provides ideas on how these can be used throughout the home:
"A large proportion of the properties in the Brighton and Hove areas are from the Regency period, typified by beautiful pale stucco-ed exteriors, bay windows, high ceilings, moldings and of course the geometric or patterned floor and wall tiles.
Although the tiles from this era were made to last, unfortunately in some cases they have deteriorated beyond repair or have been removed by homeowners, and therefore there is a steady demand for new products which offer the look and appeal of authentic Victorian tiles.
For homeowners looking to reinstate an appropriately fitting floor or wall tile to a period property, Original Style’s extensive range of geometric and patterned tiles is hard to beat. They can be used to restore the tiled areas of Regency-era properties – both indoors and out - to their original glory. Not only are they striking and authentic-looking but they are also hard wearing, long lasting and durable and they will truly enhance period properties.
Whether you’re looking for tiles for the outside of your property or to suit interior application, here are my suggestions:
For tiled paths, porches and entrance halls it’s hard to beat the smart combination of ivory and black tiles. These frost-proof tiles can be laid in a classic alternating chequerboard fashion or a configuration of triangular, diamond, octagonal or hexagonal tiles can be used to make a border.
Bathroom or kitchen walls will benefit from the addition of one of Original Style’s tile sets. These highly patterned tiles – with art nouveau scenes, stylized organic forms, fleur de lys and other typical Victorian motifs – are available in sets of 4, 9 or 36 tiles and can be used to create a fantastic feature wall behind a bath, range or hob.
Original Style’s Victorian wall tile range also extends to intricately decorated tiles which are ideal for use as fireplace surrounds in Victorian living rooms or any other rooms which include a fireplace, such as bedrooms and dining rooms. These tiles faithfully reproduce genuine Victorian designs and range from panels, single tiles, continuous patterns, dimensional relief forms and decorative borders.
There are so many different styles of Victorian-inspired tile available, so if you’re not sure what would best suit your property then we would encourage you to pop into our St. Richards Road showroom and we would be happy to give our personal recommendations.”
